Starting criminal cases against advocates will be difficult

The State Duma, the lower chamber of Russian Parliament, on June 24 adopted amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure. The changes aim to straiten the process of opening criminal proceedings against advocates.

Criminal case against a member of the Bar will be instituted by the heads of the investigative committees of the prosecutor’s office of the Subject of the Federation. As the law stands at the moment proceedings against an advocate can be launched at the lower level, by the decision of the city or district office.

To become the law the act needs to be approved by the Federal Council, and signed by the President.
