Parking in Disabled Bays

Leaving your car in a parking place reserved for disabled people will now cost an impressive 5,000 roubles ($180) against 200 roubles ($7) yesterday. The new law increasing penalties almost 25 times for illegal parking in disabled bays came into force today.

Fines for not allocating specific spaces for the handicapped have soared too: for company officials from 500 roubles ($18) to 5,000 roubles ($180), and for businesses from 5,000 roubles ($180) to 100,000 roubles ($3,600).

The law makes Russia’s legislation against the abuse of disabled drivers’ rights one of the strictest in Europe; yet the harshness of law here, as Russians like to say, is dampened by poor enforcement.
